CIA is an unknown post-punk song recorded from CFNY in 1984 and uploaded to YouTube in 2020.
On 21 February 2020, user datafreq first posted the song to the New Wave Outpost forums. The song came from a cassette tape recorded in Canada in 1984.
On 08 April 2020, user Synthman78 posted the chorus onto Spirit of Radio, asking if anyone knew it. They claimed the song was from 1985, but they didn’t say where they got it from.
On 20 July 2020, YouTube user DJFormaldehyde uploaded the song to YouTube and the New Wave Outpost Forums asking for help identifying it. He claimed it was recorded onto tape from Canadian radio station CFNY-FM in 1984, although he was not confident on the timeline, and that it was his friend's cassette.
The song is thought to have been recorded before July 1984, due to the song 'You Think You're A Man' by Divine, which was released in July 1984 and was the newest of all songs on the tape. The majority of other songs on the tape were British in origin, ranging from 1980 to 1984.
It has been proposed that the song was actually aired as part of CFNY's annual Talent Search contest. The contest aired fifty songs each year, which usually consisted of unsigned or lesser known bands.
Are you coming home for vacation
Can you leave your work behind
Will someone man your battlestation
Will you give them all your time
We all feel the same frustration
And hope to God you're on our side
Are you coming home to stay
Or will you spend this winter driving me insane
Are you coming home to stay
Or will you spend the season at the CIA
Last year you studied Russian wheatfields
Searched for silos you'd never find
And when they found out, you struck a deal
To bring back Levis on company time
But you jumped ship once in Israel
And slipped away at the Arab line
Can you paint a still life of your location
Will the children wear a smile
Do you believe that's liberation
Or is it trimming for your file
If someone deserves a commendation
Let's present it at his final mile
Are you coming
Are you coming home
